Weekly Update

Dear Families,

I wanted to share a little bit of information with you. I sent out an email yesterday (please let me know if you did not receive it) with information for ordering from our Scholastic book order. In today’s Friday Folders will be a few Scholastic Book Order catalogs. I did not send them home earlier in the month knowing we would be having the book fair at school and not wanting to take away from that. You are welcome to order from the November catalogs that are coming home, but I will be submitting the order on Tuesday the 26th before I leave for Thanksgiving break. I do not have catalogs for December yet and do not know if I will receive any so this may be the last chance to order Christmas/Holiday gifts from Scholastic! You can order online with our class code L922Y. Even if ordering online, the order will be submitted on Tuesday the 26th before I leave for Thanksgiving break. If you’d like your order to be a gift, simply send me a note or email and ask me to set aside the books. We can arrange for you to pick them up or I can discreetly wrap them in bulletin board paper and send them home with your student.I know this isn't a lot of time. If I do receive December catalogs I will send them home as soon as possible.

Upcoming Important Dates

Good morning!

Our student council representatives, Sariah and Caroline, reported from their meeting today some important upcoming dates.

On November 26th (this coming TUESDAY!) there is a school sponsored Twin Day. Students may pair together to dress alike. They can dress alike as twins, triplets, quadruplets, etc. We want everybody to feel included! If a student doesn't partner up with somebody, the class voted to wear blue that day so they could be "twins" with somebody else in the class that also didn't partner up.

December 3rd-14th will be a hat, glove, mitten, scarf drive. New items may be taken to the office to be hung on the tree.

We'll be leaving for our first field trip in about twenty minutes! The kids are super excited... hopefully they're still paying attention in media with Ms. Stemmons right now!

Weekly Update

Hello!

Last week's Celebration of Books was a huge success! I giant thank you to the help and support from our families. We spent a lot of time reading on October 31st, dressed as book characters. We went and read to Kindergartners in Mrs. Hotchkiss' class and to third grade buddies in Miss McClelland's class.

We had a bunch of fun costumes, also. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures to the blog, I'll post a few that I took that day.

Next week are our Parent Teacher Conferences. I can't wait to see you and share specific things your child has been working on in class.

Also next week on November 13th, will be a celebration for all students who have not received an office referral during the first trimester. A note from the office will be coming home soon with more information.

Next week's specials are:
Monday: Music

We are learning informational writing. We had to pick a topic that we know a lot about. We got to write a quick draft. Today we got to write anything we want. Last week we took a test about sharks. Then on Tuesday Miss. Baxter told us that we are going to publish an information piece of writing. We don’t have to do all the fancy parts of the publishing process.

Reading
In reading we are working on summarizing stories. If we read to partner we don’t need to write a summary. If we read to self we do have a summary. We at least read about 30-60 minutes every day if we have a problem it takes a lot of our reading time. We have reading groups too. We have to write summary’s there too for our group work

Word Work
We started to use a book that helps our writing and reading. The color books mean the type of skills you need to work on. We have to cut glue and do the back.

WRITING
This week in writing we are working on re-writing and retelling our stories so we can go to the computer lab and publish them. We all have to write our stories that we are going to publish on a piece of notebook paper so we have a copy to take to the computer lab. When we finish are writing assignment for the day we can free write which means we can write about anything or do school mail. The published writing might be finished in time for scoop night so parents can come and see it. All the students in our class want to have their writing in scoop night. We are working on our cursive k, l, h, and t
READING
This week in reading we got new reading group books. We get non-fiction books this time. After we get our reading group books we have to read the chapters Miss Baxter tells us to and then we write facts and important information in our reading response journals. When we are done with all of that we get to read to self or read to partner. You can sit where ever you want around the room and some people have cushions and pillows.
MATH
In math this week we are learning how multilpulcation works. We have groups of three and four and were making number strips with counting by tens, nines, eights, sevens, six’s, fives, fours, threes twos, and ones on recit tape. “Oh” and we even have to write observations in our math journals about what we see when all of our strips are layed out.
BIRTHDAYS
This week we had a lot of birthdays which means a lot of CUPCAKES “YAY”. There was Sariah’s birthday and Kyleigh’s birhhday, and Daniella’s birthday.
So that was what made the classes whole week because everyone likes cupcakes. Plus some of the cupcakes tasted like brownies and some people like brownies better than cupcakes. Also Sariahs cupcake icing seemed like it was coconut icing even though some icing just tastes like that
SIENCE
For sience we are learing about force , motion, and friction. So we do experiments and watch videos on small machines. We all have a packet were we put our questions and our answers to our questions when we’re done with our experiment.

A Few Notes and Reminders

Hello!

Allison worked hard on our weekly update about what we've done in class (see below) but there are a few things I wanted to make sure to make note of.

Please help your child get into the routine of reading nightly, logging it on their reading log, and returning the reading log to school each Friday. Every Friday, a new one will be sent home. This will be our main homework for the time being.

The start bell for school sounds at 8:20. Please try to make sure your child is at school on time. We have a number of kids who are late almost every day. It makes it extremely difficult to get our day started right away when I must regive directions each time a student comes in late.

Next week is the Make a Difference canned food drive! Bring non-perishable items to the commons.

Scholastic orders will be submitted on October 25th.

Next week's specials are:
Monday: PE (wear tennis shoes!)
Tuesday: Counselor (and Library Check-Out)
Wednesday: Art
Thursday: Music
Friday: PE (wear tennis shoes!)

Starting this past Monday (October 7th) students without Office Referrals during the first trimester will get to take part in a game day at the end of the trimester. I'd love it if all 24 of us get to participate!

Our Celebration of Books will be on October 31st. Students may dress up on that day as a book character. Costumes must be school appropriate and may not include masks, gore, props or weapons, hair paint, or face paint. Your child must be comfortable to wear it all day as there will not be time to change during the day. More information will be coming about the fun activities we will be doing that day.

Lastly, a GIGANTIC thank you to everybody that helped out with Fun Fest in any way. I was able to walk around a little bit and it looked like the kids were having a blast. Our basket looked fabulous. And none of it could have happened without your help, donations, and time and energy, so THANK YOU!

Miss Baxter

Computer Lab and Classroom Request

We go to the computer lab multiple times a week to work in FASTT Math and myON reader. The headphones provided in the lab do not always work well. I strongly recommend sending in a personal pair of headphones to be kept in your student's locker for personal use.

We've begun our school wide Mail Club! I have a couple of requests for supplies and materials to make Mail Club letter writing a little more fun. First, we would love to have letter sized envelopes to use to mail our letters. Secondly, if  you have any old stickers laying around, we could use them as stamps on our envelopes. Please send in anything you're willing to donate for class use. Thank you!

Blogging Beginnings...

Today while the kids had a glorious day off, I was here at school slaving away at creating a new classroom blog! Hopefully we'll work as a class to keep it updated with all the latest news and happenings of our class.
